A Trip Down Memory Lane In Allentown, PA
1 min read ### Some days you just need to get in the car and drive 3 hours for a steak sandwich... And a couple hotdogs at Yocco's.
When you don't know what to have for lunch, but you remember that there's a really great steak sandwich restaurant in Allentown, Pennsylvania, there's nothing left to do but hop in the car and get going. The truth is that we all wanted to go see where the Knecht clan grew up. Lunch was just an added bonus. The weather over the last two weeks has been horrendous, but that didn't stop us from having fun. We started our day at the Brass Rail restaurant where we had steak sandwiches with Vern Arndt, a family friend from Craig's days in Allentown far longer ago than any of us wants to think about. After that, we took a driving tour of the vairous places Craig and Dana lived in their time in Allentown. When we stopped at his parent's old place, the lady who lived there saw us out front, taking pictures. Fortunately, she didn't call the police. Instead, she invited us in to look at how the house had changed over the years. For me, it was a chance to put a real image to the stories Dana has told me of her Nana's house. Although the current owner was a little nuts, she was more than gracious about letting us look around. Our next stop was Yocco's hotdogs. For years, I've heard about the wonders of Yocco's dogs, but had never had the chance experience them. Although they were really tasty, the best part of our stop there was finally understanding why Dana likes her hotdogs crunchy. (She'd tell you with a little pop or snap when you bite into them, but I still think they're burned to a crisp.) Having eaten more than we should have, it was time to head home. But what trip would be complete without a stop for doughnuts. So, before heading back to the DC area, we stopped at Duck Donuts! If you've never had a Duck doughnut, you don't know what you're missing. Marilynn was so excited that she couldn't wait until we got home. The first of our dozen doughnuts was gone before we got all the way out of the parking lot!
Craig swears he grew up here, but after hearing the stories, I'm guessing he had a sore butt much of the time and we're all still waiting for evidence of this "Growing Up" nonsense! A trip to Allentown isn't complete without a trip to the Brass Rail Restaurant (TBR) for a steak sandwich and Yocco's for hot dogs. Maybe next time, we'll space out the food fest by more than a couple hours. Yocco's West, right by Muhlenberg Lake Craig swears he grew up here, but after hearing the stories, I'm guessing he had a sore butt much of the time and we're all still waiting for evidence of this "Growing Up" nonsense!
Nana’s was 427 S. Muhlenberg St. Dana's "ski" slope when she was a little girl. She swears she got lightheaded when looking own the "slope."
(The "hill" is to her right.)

Nana’s was 427 S. Muhlenberg St. I don't know how we got so lucky, but the current owner was home and was kind enough to let us in to see the place. What a neat bonus to the trip! Allentown, PA Allentown, PA Somehow my computer wanted this picture to exist. I have no idea how I did it, but I like it! The first home Craig ever bought and the one where Dana swears she "Grew up." Again, waiting for evidence of this growing up stuff. The architecture here is different from what I'm used to. I really thought the fire escapes/entrances were neat. The trees in Allentown have been around a long time and many roads have "arches" that cover them when the leaves are on the trees The trees in Allentown have been around a long time and many roads have "arches" that cover them when the leaves are on the trees This apartment was a temporary home before buying the home in another photo. If I put the year, two people will shoot me.
What I will say is that this apartment proved that Dana can't be trusted with ducklings in the house...
