Dillon, days 176-181 of my life in DC! Saturday, 8 April 2017

I got the “Birds & The Trees” talk from Dad, but I’m not sure he understood what he was talking about. I know I’m new around here and have a lot to learn, but I thought it was the “Birds & The Bees” talk. Oh well, he means well and his story made sense. Let me back up a bit and give you some background first though. Dad loves to take pictures and with all the birds in the area, he gets some really nice shots. To bring the birds closer and make them comfortable with just hanging out in the trees, he has set up a bunch of bird feeders. Those feeders work really well. The birds love the free snacks, and so do Micky and I. When the birds sit on the feeders, they tend to make a mess. Guess where that mess goes. It lands on the ground where Micky and I are ready to Hoover it up. This is where the issues began. Earlier this week, I was out in the yard looking for stray seed and generally enjoying my snack. Unfortunately, the birds were doing the same thing right above me. I say unfortunately because what I didn’t realize is that when a bird stuffs its little beak with food, poop gets forced out the other end. Guess where that poop goes! In this case, it went right on my head! I didn’t notice or care, but when Mom saw it, she thought it was a flower petal or something. So, she tried to brush it off. Bad Idea! She got a nice smear of poop all over her hand and it was streaked down my head. I bet if you tried really hard, you could guess what happened next. Yup, bath time for the four-legged critters. I don’t really mind the bath because I get a nice massage and the water is cozy warm. What I mind is the mani-pedi that comes with the bath. I don’t know why someone would ruin a nice relaxing bath by trimming nails, but Mom seems to think it is a great idea. Maybe she does it because we’re corralled up and paying more attention to not slipping than what she’s doing to our feet. For Micky, this is about the only way to do her nails. She’s really bitchy about having her nails done otherwise. What a wuss! Anyway, back to the great outdoors. We have a bunch of trees in our yard and with Spring finally swinging into action, the leaves are starting to come back. All this growth and warmer weather is really bringing in the birds. Micky and I love being outside, enjoying the sun and watching all the wildlife. This is where Dad’s little conversation about the birds and the trees comes in. At night, after we’ve come inside for the day, I sit on the couch and gack every few minutes. For those of you who don’t know what a gack is, do this. Open your mouth as wide as you can, stick your tongue out, and then try to cough! That’s what a gack is and that horrible noise is the same one I make all night. So, Dad’s question is about whether I gack because I’ve got birdseed stuck in my throat or because I’m allergic to all the tree pollen and stuff. Either way, the gacking isn’t likely to go away any time soon. Dad isn’t going to get rid of his bird feeders, I’m not planning to stop munching on fallen birdseed, and the trees are here to stay. This means that while Dad’s story was interesting and all, it fell on deaf ears. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you why Micky got a bath. Her bath was the result of excavating a giant crater in the back of the yard. With all the rain we’ve had lately, the ground is very muddy. When Micky starts digging, most of the mud sticks to her little feet. Ordinarily, Mom would have marched out to scoop her up because when she is on the hunt, her ears don’t work so well. Micky is smart though. She dug her hole way at the back of the yard where Mom couldn’t get to her without sinking knee-deep into the mud. As you might imagine, Mom was not happy about this and there was lots of “talkin’ to her lord!” When Micky finally came to the door, her next stop was the tub! Time to head back outside and soak up some of that wonderful sunlight and chase squirrels.
