Dillon, day 162 of my life in DC! Monday, 20 March 2017

Man Down, Man Down, uh, I mean Dog Down! You know what they say, war is hell and sometimes there are casualties. Today, in the war on squirrels, we had our first casualty. It was bound to happen sooner or later, but it’s never easy to see a member of your team go down. Let me set the scene for you. It was a cool morning, but the sun was trying. You could tell it was going to be a great day. That meant the squirrels were out in force. Micky and I quickly realized that we were going to have to be on our toes all day. We were doing a good job and the squirrels never managed to get a foothold in the yard. Maybe that’s why it happened. Maybe we got too comfortable in our ability to keep them away. Whatever the reason, on a routine trip down the stairs to repel the vermin, Micky bit it. I don’t mean that Micky bit a squirrel, I mean Micky bit “it.” She stumbled down the stairs and did a face plant on the landing. Our medical team, Mom, heard the commotion, but didn’t think anything of it since Micky collected herself and carried on with the attack. In fact, Mom thought it was me falling down the stairs. (Yeah, I’m a bit clumsy sometimes.) It wasn’t until we came in that Mom spotted the damage. It wasn’t terrible, but little Micky’s nose has a nice raw spot and it’s a little puffy. Thankfully, Mom’s been down this road before and knew exactly what to do. A little antibiotic cream later and we were back on patrol. It’s a good thing we kept our eyes peeled. This afternoon, somebody started digging a hole next to the house. As soon as he did, Micky and I sounded the alarm. Turns out it was a false alarm though. Somebody called him and we didn’t get the memo. Oh well, at least we earned our snooze time tonight.
