Winter interrupts our visit to New Cumberland, PA

Occasionally, I get the opportunity to visit some of the other Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) sites. Although these visits are typically quick, it's always fun to get away and see something new. Once nice bonus for this trip is that my destination was New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, which meant I could drive myself up there in just over 2½ hours.

What I wasn't counting on was winter interrupting our visit with roughly 6 inches of snow in the wee hours of day two. Now, ordinarily, I wouldn't mind the snow, but I don't drive in the snow a lot and driving my little Toyota doesn't have all-wheel drive. So, it worked out that we drove several hours north to sit in a hotel and telework for the day. When you look at the photos below, you'll see that by the late afternoon, the sun was shining and most of the snow was gone. Great, back to the task at hand.

One thing I can't show you because of security concerns is the massive warehouse where over 3 million different parts move through on their way to the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines around the world. We were lucky enough to get a tour of the building during our stay, which let us see the modernization and transformation to 21st Century technology. Although it still has a ways to go, it is clear that this warehouse will operate on the cutting edge when it's complete.

Overall, the trip was successful and a lot of fun. Sure, there were some hiccups with the snow and the typical communications problems, but we also had the chance to get to know our counterparts within DLA Distribution, enjoy a few good dinners at new restaurants, and complete the tasks we had gone up there to accomplish.

I can't wait to go back once the warehouse upgrade is complete.
